The Lieberman clause is an addendum to the traditional text thats add a layer of protection for the women in the partnership, preventing potential agunah situations.

Standing under the chuppah the bride and the groom said to each other, “You are consecrated to me as my spouse with this ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel.” The groom and the bride undertake this pledge of love: They choose each other as friends according to the teachings of our ancestors who said, “Acquire a friend with whom you will learn, next to whom you will sleep, and in whom you will confide.”

They consecrate themselves to each other and will always be true to each other. They take on all the duties and rights of family members toward each other. They promise to lead a life of justice and loving kindness in their family and community until the end, in accordance with the verse, “Let me be a seal upon your heart, like the seal upon your arm.” The bride and the groom acknowledged the responsibilities.

This is a halachic “shtar,” or a contract of mutual partnership, with an egalitarian text. This is an adaptation of Rachel Adler’s Brit Ahuvim, a modern text created to redefine a Jewish marriage in an egalitarian manner, while maintaining legal clauses to define the commitments.

ב       בשבת ב          ימים לחודש           שנת חמשת אלפים ושבע מאות שבעים ו          לבריאת העולם, שמקביל ל          לחודש          , שנת אלפיים עשרים ו          למניין שאנו מונים ב         ,          ,           בת           ו          ו          בן           ו          מצהירים בנוכחות עדים על שותפות שתכונן בית בקרב עם ישראל.
 הכלה* אמרה לחתן*: היה לי חבר ושותף בברית. אני אייחד מקום בליבי רק עבורך. החתן* אמר לכלה*: היי לי חברה ושותפה בברית. אני אייחד מקום בליבי רק עבורך.

אנחנו מתחייבים שהאחד יעזור לשני על סף המוות ויסייע להוציא לפועל את הבקשות ההגיוניות האחרונות של בני הזוג הגוסס וישמור על נוכחות אוהבת ונאמנה. מי ייתן ובריתנו זו תגשים את דברי הכתוב: ”שיקנה האדם חבר לעצמו, שיאכל עמו, וישתה עמו, ויקרא עמו, וישנה עמו, ויישן עמו ויגלה לו כל סתריו: סתר תורה וסתר דרך ארץ.“ אנו נכנסים לברית זו בכל לבנו ובכל נפשנו וכל מה שיש לנו. והכל שריר וקיים.

English:

Each said to the other: Be my friend and my partner in covenant. I will hold a place in my heart only for you. “I will bind myself to you forever. I will bind myself to you with righteousness and justice and lovingkindness and compassion.”

Our partnership is a holy covenant, like the covenant of David and Yonatan, as it is written: “And the soul of Yonatan was bound up with the soul of David, and Yonatan loved him even as his own self…and Yonatan and David forged a covenant, based upon each loving the other as he loved himself.”

These are the provisions of our partnership: We will cherish, honor, and support each other faithfully according to the customs of all our peoples. We will strive to be compassionate and generous, to appreciate our differences with honesty and humor, to rejoice together and to be a refuge for each other, all the days of our lives. We will challenge each other to learn and grow. We take it upon ourselves to create a true partnership of equals. We will share decisions for our family, responsibility for our household, and ownership of all our property and our future earnings, while safeguarding for each other a measure of financial independence. We bind ourselves to each others’ families, as it is written, “your people shall be my people.” We shall teach all the children who bless our household and our community to “love peace and pursue peace, love all living creatures, and draw close to Torah.” We will work together as a family to end all oppression and repair our world, striving toward justice while maintaining balance in our lives.

If, God forbid, either of us seeks to end this covenant, we pledge to act with respect toward one another and to resolve matters honorably, whether through a Bet Din or, where applicable, a civil divorce certificate in accordance with state law. No 'Get of divorcement' shall be required.

We pledge that one will help the other at the time of death by carrying out the last rational requests of the dying partner and maintaining a faithful and loving presence. May this covenant fulfill the teaching that “one should get a companion with whom to eat, drink, study Torah, learn, sleep, and to whom to reveal all of one’s secrets, the secrets of Torah, and the secrets of the ways of the world.” We enter into this covenant with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all that we have. All this is valid and binding.

This text pulls from the traditional Ketubah language (with kinyan) with the wording adapted for queer couples. The following text is for two men, but can be adapted to suit any pairings.

ושבע מאות שמונים ושלושה לבריאת העולם למנין שאנו מונים כאן בעיר ______ איך____ בן ____ אמר ל________ בן ________:"תהיה אהובי ובעלי כדת משה וישראל, ואני אוקיר, אכבד, אתמוך ואשמור אותך בהתאם למנהג הבעלים היהודים המוקירים, מכבדים, מפרנסים ומקיימים את משפחותיהם בנאמנות. ואני אתן לך מאה מטבעות כסף ואספק לך דיור וביגוד וצרכים ואת זכויות הזוגיות שלך לפי הנוהג המקובל." ו_______הסכים. החתן _____ אמר: "את האחריות של כתובה זו אני מקבל על עצמי ואממן מכל מה שיש לי כעת או שבעתיד ארכוש. מהיום והלאה, כל הרכוש שלי, אפילו החולצה שעל כתפיי, ימושכן לתשלום כתובה זו בין אם במהלך חיי ובין אם לאחר חיי." אחריות כתובה זו התקבלה על ידי חיים החתן עם כל החומרה של שטרי כתובות כתיקון חכמינו ז"ל. כתובה זו אינה פורמליות ולא צורה משפטית סתמית. קבענו את קבלתם של חיים בן אברהם וחוה ואיתן ראובן בן אברהם ושרה, על חוזה זה, על כל מה שכתוב ומפורש לעיל, עם מאמר שכשר לכך. והכל  שריר וקים.
